Introducing NeW women to our Conservative Woman of the Month

Dear John,

As we shared last month, NeW is excited about this year as we celebrate The Year of the Conservative Woman. Through this campaign, we are privileged to feature incredible female conservative leaders and their inspirational work.

We kicked off the campaign by featuring Christiana Bain, founder of the Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery programs at Harvard University’s Kennedy School and Babson College. Not only were we grateful for the opportunity to highlight Bain’s excellent work on this global issue, but it gave us the chance to educate and equip NeW women on how they could get involved in National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Currently, we have connected five women with Christina's work who are interning with her this semester. You can watch the conversation we had with Bain last month on Facebook here. ([link removed])

This month, we are thrilled to announce our Conservative Woman of the Month is Kay Coles James, President of The Heritage Foundation.
Under her leadership, Heritage has been named the number one think tank in the world for its impact on public policy for three years in a row. One of her greatest passions has been guiding Heritage in its outreach and sharing of its message with young people, minorities, and women who don’t necessarily consider themselves conservative but who practice conservative principles in their own lives.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, and raised in her early years in Richmond’s housing projects to a single mother in the segregated South, Mrs. James was one of the first children to take part in a historic experiment to desegregate Virginia’s all-white schools. She would go on to achieve the American dream, graduating from the historically black Hampton University; serving four U.S. presidents; dining with princes, prime ministers, and other world leaders; and helping America chart a path for recovery from the devastation of COVID-19 as the chairman of the National Coronavirus Recovery Commission.

Before becoming President of The Heritage Foundation, James served on the National Commission on Children for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, was the assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President George H.W. Bush, she was appointed the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management by President George W. Bush, and was appointed the chairwoman of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission by President Donald J. Trump.

As a commentator, lecturer, and policy leader, she appears on numerous national news and talk programs, and her opinion pieces appear in newspapers across the country. She is the author of three books about personal success and growth: her award-winning autobiography, Never Forget (1994); Transforming America from the Inside Out (1995); and What I Wish I’d Known Before I Got Married (2001).

We are looking forward to an empowering discussion with James and hope you will join us on Facebook Live ([link removed]) . The conversation will take place on Thursday, February 18 at 2pm EST.

Sincerely,
Kathryn Alford
Communications Manager for NeW
Chapter Spotlight

This past fall, a group of women at Texas Tech were thrilled to learn about an organization created to support conservative women like themselves. They came together to launch a NeW chapter on their campus. Meghan Monahan, President of NeW at Texas Tech University, shared, “I am involved in multiple conservative organizations on campus, however, I was attracted to starting a NeW chapter at Texas Tech because it will be the first conservative women’s organization at Texas Tech to create an inclusive and open environment for women’s voices in conservatism on campus.”

“Having a NeW chapter on campus is important to me because it is an organization for women to be able to come together that have similar interests. We also have the opportunity to grow professionally,” said Madison Ling, Treasurer of NeW at Texas Tech University.

Lauren Yantis, Community Service Chair for NeW at Texas Tech University expressed, “This group is important because we need to stand together and educate others on campus.”

NeW provides an intellectual home for conservative women on campus. We are doing that through empowering our campus chapters and professional networks – giving them the tools they need to stand strong against the liberal bias they are facing.
