NBC News: “Democrats introduce bill to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state”
Last week, Democrats in Congress reintroduced legislation that would make Washington, D.C., the 51st state of the United States. As you might remember, I joined my colleagues in the House last year in passing a plan to address D.C. statehood for the first time ever. Since then, violent insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol -- a dangerous attack on our democracy in the backyard of the more than 700,000 Americans who call D.C. home. D.C. officials don’t have full control over local affairs -- including public safety crises -- and Washingtonians don’t have full voting representation in Congress because the District isn’t a state. This isn’t an issue of partisan politics. It’s an American issue. It’s about our democracy. It’s about taxation without representation. It’s about everything our country stands for.
