Earlier this week we shared the ominous news that the COVID-19 emergency in the Amazon is escalating dramatically. While we are responding and mobilizing resources for immediate action, much more is urgently needed to lessen the tragic loss of lives to the aggressive new strain of COVID-19.

Since June 2020, we have disbursed $359,000 in COVID-19 relief alone to Indigenous communities and organizations. So far in 2021, we have committed over $200,000 more to the healthcare emergency, and we will mobilize and deploy an additional $500,000 in the coming months.

As the crisis is ongoing, your support is still needed to cover immediate needs in Indigenous communities across the Amazon, including oxygen concentrators, rapid-response and traditional health care, food and medical kits, prevention (PPE and vaccines), transportation, logistics, and communications infrastructure. We are also prioritizing food and economic sovereignty projects led by women.

Combined with the intentional destruction of Indigenous territories by deforestation, industrial development, and rampant arson, the spread of COVID-19 is more than a public health emergency: it is ethnocide.
