At Verified Voting, we are privileged to work closely with election officials on a daily basis. Their work to safely and securely administer our elections goes far beyond what voters see on Election Day - and, as we’ve seen over the past year, can at times come at great personal risk. To shine a light on the important role they play in our democratic process, we’ve launched a new Q&A series: ⬇️

A Spotlight on Election Officials

Neal Kelley ([link removed]) ’s (Orange County, California’s Registrar of Voters) background in logistics, marketing, management, and finance all comes into play when the voters of Orange County participate in the democratic process. Here are some excerpts from his interview:

How does the responsibility of carrying out democracy shape your work?
“The responsibility of carrying out our democratic process is fundamental to everything that I do -- I look at all of our processes and the voter experience through the lens of that awesome responsibility. I take it to heart on a daily basis and all of my decisions are informed by it.”

What don’t Americans know about the election process that you wish they did?
“The care with which we handle every ballot is something that is lost among the white noise of politics and glossy media stories.”

We’ve seen a lot of press about election administrators facing threats to their personal safety. How does this subversive rhetoric affect your job?
“It is alarming, and it does concern me. I truly believe our founding fathers would be ashamed, sad, and angry over this behavior. At the end of the day we are counting ballots.”
