This past week has been a flurry of news about everyday people bankrupting hedge funds for billions of dollars by organizing to buy GameStop stock en masse, drastically inflating its price. It has resulted in “unprecedented market conditions”, the halting of trading, investigations by regulatory agencies like the SEC, and a reappearance by Anthony Scaramucci to call this incident the “French revolution of Finance”.
The tactic Redditors are using against the hedge funds is called a short squeeze. Without getting too much into the mechanics, it’s important to understand that there are two types of investments happening -- stocks and options.
