We’re making progress against the abomination that is the death penalty.

22 states have no death penalty, and in 2020 alone, voters elected reform
prosecutors who oppose the death penalty in cities representing 11% of the
2,620 people on death row.

But the death penalty is still legal at the federal level. And after 17
years with no federal executions, starting in July 2020 the Trump
administration went on a killing spree — executing 13 people.

There are still 50 people on death row today. And without decisive action
from President Biden, those 50 people will remain in limbo.

The new administration has promised — time and time again — to prioritize
criminal justice reform. And now Reps. Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley have
authored a letter asking the President to commute all death sentences for
Americans currently on death row and end the federal death penalty.

Real Justice is proud to co-sign this letter, and we’ll need a grassroots
army to join us in turning up the pressure on President Biden. Are you

The death penalty is barbaric. There’s no justice involved. It’s never
been about justice. It’s punitive. A crude show of force. And it
disproportionately kills far more Black and brown people than white
people.

There is absolutely no denying that it must be abolished. And although
this movement is growing on a state-by-state level, the federal government
should set the example to put an end to this racist, unjust, and
ineffective practice.

That’s why we’re so glad for the leadership of Rep. Cori Bush and Rep.
Ayanna Pressley. We know that President Biden can be swayed on this issue
— he’s promised as such. We just need to turn up the pressure right here,
right now.
