There are lots of ways to change the world. Some ways — as we saw at Capitol Hill on January 6 — rely on fear, intimidation, and violence. But here at CCL, we have a different way. We make positive change through education, connection, and respect.

That's the message in our new video posted on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter this week. We're showing the world how CCL engages with democracy.

You can participate, too! Post photos of times when you've lobbied with us on Capitol Hill, and use the hashtag #ShareDemocracy.

In other news this week:

Regional conferences: Last weekend the Mid-Atlantic and North Winds regions held virtual conferences. The two regions joined together for an opening plenary attended by 267 volunteers. At the North Winds conference, attendees heard recorded messages in their closing plenary from Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE). The Mid-Atlantic conference featured a “Bridges to Coalition” panel of diverse American thought leaders who shared stories of what shaped them as Americans. More conferences are coming up on Feb. 20 for the Tornadoes, 3rd Coast, Northeast and Appalachia regions. Details and registration pages can be found here.

Citizens’ Climate International launches: We have formally registered and launched Citizens’ Climate International — a new sister organization to CCE and CCL. CCE Global Strategy Director Joe Robertson said CCI “will empower citizen volunteers to build political will for a livable world, coordinate Citizens’ Climate engagement in international processes, and manage formal partnerships within the growing family of Citizens’ Climate organizations.” Learn more about CCI at CitizensClimate.earth.

Job opening in D.C. office: Citizens’ Climate Education has a full-time position open for a Government Affairs Coordinator in our Washington office, which will help our D.C. team to develop and implement policy goals and support volunteers to achieve those goals. Application deadline is Feb. 15. More information here.

Hiring Conservative Outreach Director: Citizens’ Climate Education is also seeking a full-time staffer to recruit, retain and activate more conservative and Republican supporters. Deadline to apply is Feb. 21. Learn more and apply here.

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Are you a realtor, or do you know a realtor? We’re asking all realtors to head to the Real Estate Climate Declaration to express their support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Each signature helps us get traction with Congress and with the National Association of Realtors.

If you have more time: Review CCL’s core values and post in your favorite social media how you are able to use or personify one of CCL’s values in your climate advocacy work. Tag your member of Congress, use the hashtag #GrassrootsClimate, and include a link to CCL’s core values page in your post.

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more.

Chapter development: Talent show draws crowd

In planning their December meeting, the Fresno CCL chapter realized they had a little extra time, so they decided to do something fun that would give their members a chance to learn more about each other: A talent show. Calling it the Fresno Follies, members entertained the group with synchronized juggling, piano playing, drumming, singing and more. Co-leader Connie Young said the meeting “broke our attendance record (both online and in person) and lots of younger people showed up for it.”

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the chapter development lever like these volunteers did, watch or read this training on transformational organizing.

CCL’s youth movement: The COVID-19 pandemic has had one silver lining: Increased participation among CCL’s younger members. During CCL’s virtual lobby week in December, more young people participated in meetings with congressional offices than ever before. In fact, 112 students under the age of 18 joined those meetings.
