Did you know that members of Congress have a special exemption that allows them to carry weapons on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol? Not only that, they can (and do) keep loaded firearms in their offices with no rules about the type of guns or how they should be secured.

This has been a problem for years, but it has taken on new urgency with the arrival of a new crop of outspoken, gun-toting members in Congress. They don’t just boast about carrying guns on the Capitol grounds — they insist on bringing them into the House chamber, even as they cheer on domestic terrorists! One of these members has even called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed.

It is just a matter of time before we have a tragic accident, or worse. That’s why I’ve been fighting to close this outdated and dangerous loophole for years, because lawmakers should be held to the same standards as anyone else visiting or working in the Capitol.

We’ve seen what happens when security breaks down in the Capitol: violence can disrupt and threaten our democracy. And sometimes the threat is from within.

If you agree that lawmakers should be required to follow basic gun safety rules in the Capitol — that they should not be allowed to carry weapons inside the Capitol complex or leave them unsecured in their offices — please sign my petition today.
