Dear John,

On behalf of the Amnesty International team, we want to thank you for your
commitment to defend and promote human rights. All the work we do would not be
possible without the support of people like you.

In this newsletter we are thrilled to share some of our biggest achievements in
the last months as well as updates for some of our ongoing campaings. The
stories you will read have come about as a result of the commitment and
dedicated work by human rights supporters accross Canada and the world.

We hope these stories inspire you to continue working with us to build a world
where all humans can live free of fear and persecution.

Happy reading !

Saeed Malekpour is FREE !

After 11 years of relentless campaigning by Saeed's sister Maryam Malekpour,
Saeed is free and back in Canada.

Maryam thanked all the people who did not forget Saeed and who supported them
during this long and painful time.

"The nightmare is finally over!" Maryam wrote on Twitter. "Together we
prevailed".

Good News! Canada Joins the Arms Trade Treaty!

Canada will become a state party of the Arms Trade Treaty on September 17, 2019.

Amnesty International has been working on arms regulation for many years, in
2012, we exposed the paradox of bananas being subjected to more regulations than
weapons.

Despite this major milestone, our efforts to better regulate the sale of arms
are ongoing.

We oppose the transfer of Light Armoured Vehicles to Saudi Arabia in light of
the war in Yemen. Support our actions here>>>

Supporters show solidarity at Quesnel Lake

In commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the Mount Polley Mine Disaster, a delegation led by Amnesty travelled to Quesnel Lake to deliver hundreds of
"salmon" solidarity messages from all across Canada to people affected by the
mining disaster.

Members of the Concerned Citizens of Quesnel Lake showed us the area where the
Mt. Polley toxic spill took place, a vast wasteland where once a mall creek
meandered through the forest.

We stand in solidarity with the communities affected by the disaster, and we
demand the government revoke the company's permit to discharge waste water into
Quesnel Lake, and ultimately to see charges laid for this disaster.

Amnesty responds to National Inquiry

On June 3, we had the honour to be present at the ceremony where the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls released its final report.

We particularly welcomed the inclusion of a section on "Resource Extraction and
Violence Against Indigenous Women" which heavily references Amnesty
International's research on the issue.

Amnesty International Canada is committed to support Indigenous communities and
organizations to ensure that The Inquiry's 231 Calls for Justice are
implemented.

You can also find here the eight Calls for Justice for every person in Canada,
to learn how you can combat violence against Indigenous peoples >>>

Read about our Worldwide Wins for 2019

Here at Amnesty International we believe that every story of change counts.

This is why we have compiled our 30 biggest Human Rights wins for 2019
[[link removed]] some of which include the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan, the
termination of "Google's "Project Dragonfly"" which would have facilitated the
Chinese government's repressive surveillance of the internet, and the arrest of
two people in connection with the killing of human rights defender Marielle
Franco.

We recognize that there is a long way to go before everyone can fully enjoy
their Human Rights everywhere. However, we are sure that together we will
prevail !
