John,
Every February, we celebrate, recognize, and amplify Black voices who have worked tirelessly throughout our nation's history so that every American, regardless of skin color, could be afforded equal rights and opportunity.
This past spring, with the reemergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, we felt our country begin to reckon with all that the Black community has endured from enslavement, dehumanization, disenfranchisement, and systemic discrimination. Despite all of these barriers, Black community members have persevered to create movements of change for our entire society.
While we do recognize history this month, we also need to commit to fighting for Black lives each and every day. We need to make sure that Black lives matter and are valued in every facet of our society, from reproductive health care, policing, housing, and education, to economic opportunity and the fight to recover from COVID-19.
We need to recommit to undoing the systemic injustices that keep certain folks back and propel others ahead. We need to call out racist remarks or comments whenever we witness them. We need to continue learning the honest history of how our country has treated Black people and teach that truth to our children.
And we need to continue celebrating the tremendous contributions that Black Americans have made -- from politics, activism, art, music, and science to sports, literature, health care, and more.
This isn't just a commitment to make each February; these are daily steps that we can all take to be the change we want to see, correct centuries of injustice, and build the nation that we all deserve. We invite you to learn about the unique role that the Black community has played in Colorado, support more than 400 Black-owned businesses in the Denver area, and celebrate Black History Month with the City of Denver.
