Weekend television talk shows made clear that Swamp Politicians just do not get it. They think the solution to preventing protesters from attacking the Capitol again is to criticize and jail the protesters.
Yes, most all of us agree that it’s a no-brainer to say that the protester “conduct” of attacking the Capitol is wrong. George Washington himself criticized the December 16, 1773 Boston Tea Party saying he strongly disapproved of the protesters “conduct.”
But Washington, unlike politicians today, did not limit his comments to the protesters “conduct.” He also said of the Boston Tea Party “the cause of Boston will ever be considered the cause of America.”
If today’s politicians, media, and big tech think ending free speech rights, imprisoning protesters, and impeaching Trump will cure the basic problems that are dividing Americans from their government, then they are as mistaken as King George when he instituted his Coercive Acts.
King George’s reaction to the Tea Party (where ironically five people also died) was to void the Massachusetts Constitution and close the Boston Harbor on June 1, 1774.
Emotions were high and led to proclamations like Patrick Henry’s, “Give me Liberty or give me death.” The “shot heard around the world” was fired just 14 months after King George’s Coercive Acts.
In summary, the point being missed by the media and politicians and big tech is that their “coercive” reaction to Capitol protesters is much like King George’s “coercive” reaction to the Boston Tea Party. Let’s all hope history does not repeat itself.
The moral of the story, that the Swamp needs to learn, is that those Citizens who are protesting, because they believe they are being wronged by their government, do not stop protesting when their government puts in place more ways to wrong them.
