I'm Jena Griswold, Colorado Secretary of State and recently-elected Chair of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State. I am reaching out to introduce myself and explain our plans for 2021 and how you can help.
Voting rights faced an unprecedented assault in 2020. I was proud to stand with my fellow Secretaries of State to conduct and facilitate one of the most secure elections in American history.
In my home state of Colorado, the majority of votes have been cast by mail ballot since 2014. Our adoption of vote-by-mail for all increased participation in our elections for Republican, Democrat, and independent voters. When voting is accessible, Americans will make their voices heard.
But as we saw last year, lies and conspiracy theories threaten these simple policies, which help make voting accessible to all.
Our first goal in 2021 must be to stand up for democracy and reject the suppression of Americans’ votes for political gain. Our nation depends on active participation in government. Secretaries of State play a crucial role in encouraging and facilitating that participation.
Our second goal must be to prepare for the 2022 midterm elections and make sure Democrats hold and win these offices nationwide. Our democracy is not safe in the hands of election officials who spread lies to suppress voters and cheat.
We hope you will join us in pursuing these lofty goals. And we know that together, we can stand up for our democracy and protect our nation’s future.
