Stories for Grown up's

once upon a time wording

As it's Storytelling Week we thought we would draw your attention to the fascinating talk from Sam Maxfield on how fairy tales have developed from shockingly dark adult stories, to fluffy tales for children.

We Need New Names

We need new names book cover

Our next group read will be We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo, which we will be chatting about on Wednesday 24 February, 7pm.

The Booker Prize shortlisted book is currently being adapted by local playwright Mufaro Makubika for Fifth Word Theatre, and Mufaro is seeking insight into what readers connect with and take away when reading the book. The discussions will feed into Mufaro’s thinking and writing when he completes his next draft.

About the book: A poignant, powerful and unflinching novel, it tells the story of Darling who lives in Zimbabwe but dreams of moving to America. For Darling, that dream will come true. But like thousands of others who forge new lives far from home, her new life brings fresh challenges for her, and those left behind.

Take part in the chat by joining up to our Library Readers page here.

Time to Talk and Time to Change

time to talk

Thursday is Time to Talk Day and now more than ever it’s important that we  have conversations about mental health. So why not phone a friend or family member this week. You don’t need to fix it or know what to say - just a friendly ear can make a real difference to someone’s bad day. Small acts make a big difference.

For more health information and practical resources visit our health page, where you can also find out about the new local Covid-19 Asymptomatic Testing Centre.
