Last month, we saw the best and the worst of our country.

At the beginning of the month, Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff won their runoff elections in Georgia, securing a Democratic Senate Majority. A couple of weeks later, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were inaugurated and began the work of healing our country and building it back so it works for everyone -- not just those at the top.

And our grassroots community closed out the month by reaching our first end-of-month goal of 2021, putting us in a strong position as we begin this new era in Washington and work to create the change Americans demanded at the ballot box.

In the midst of those moments of joy, our country -- still struggling through the ongoing pandemic -- endured a violent insurrection by white supremacists, incited by President Trump. These domestic terrorists stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn our free and fair election.

As we begin February, I’m thinking both of the progress we’ve made as a country and the work that still needs to be done.

This month is a time to examine the achievements and contributions of Black Americans and the progress we’ve made as a country -- including electing Sen. Warnock, the first Black senator for Georgia, and Vice President Harris, our country’s first Black woman vice president.

It’s also crucial that we examine what we still need to do to achieve justice and equality for all Americans. We need to distribute another round of urgently needed COVID-19 relief, raise the minimum wage, improve access to affordable health care, ensure equal and affordable housing, combat voter suppression, fix our unequal justice system, and so much more.

We have reason to be hopeful that we’re on a better path forward as a country and we can’t stop now. I'll need you with me every step of the way as we work to rebuild our country together.

With gratitude,

Sherrod
