Hello Friend, Since President Biden’s first day in office, he has moved quickly to begin undoing harms done by the previous administration, while putting us on a path toward a more immigrant-inclusive vision for America. Today, President Biden took several more immigration-related actions, including instructing federal agencies to review the public charge “wealth test” rule — a discriminatory rule that caused many immigrants to make the impossible decision between feeding their loved ones and accessing essential health care during a global pandemic. NILC has been fighting the harmful immigrant “wealth test” for four years alongside hundreds of partners across the country in the Protecting Immigrant Families campaign we founded and co-lead. Our national campaign drove the submission of more than 250,000 public comments opposing the public charge rule, leading to today’s action. President Biden’s announcement to begin the process of eliminating this harmful policy is an important step toward ensuring we all have access to the healthcare and support systems we need during the pandemic — and ultimately, the freedom to thrive. President Biden also set in motion the critical work of reuniting families who were separated as a result of the previous administration’s “zero tolerance” policy. The new administration also reestablished the Task Force on New Americans to ensure a holistic governmentwide approach to immigrant inclusion and equity. While these are just the first steps to both undo the harms of the past while rebuilding our country, these victories are a testament to the ongoing efforts of NILC and partners like you to ensure immigrants have a seat at the table regarding these important policies. Though there’s still a lot of work to be done, our work thus far has paid off. We are thrilled to share news of these victories with you, and remain hopeful that they are just the start of even more positive change in the years to come. Thank you for all you do to help secure a more promising future for immigrants and their loved ones; these victories are yours, too. |
