I am urging President Biden today to commute every single federal death sentence and abolish the death penalty, once and for all. I join Representatives Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, AOC, Mondaire Jones — and many of our other colleagues in the House — in making this call.
Amplifying this call is one of the most important things we can do in order to begin the process of healing, and to break patterns of injustice and systemic racism in our country.

John, if we look back at our nation's dark history, it's clear that we do not have a criminal justice system. Our criminal "justice" system has been plagued by racism, xenophobia, and white supremacy. There is nothing just about the way our systems work today — and until we dismantle these systems of oppression, we will never see a true criminal justice system.
President Biden has the power, responsibility, and moral authority to begin this process and act now. He can commute the sentences of every person who is currently sentenced to death under federal law and finally put an end to the death penalty.
