Across Brooklyn and Queens, friends and family are gathering at picnics, parades, and fireworks shows. But let’s not forget what this holiday is truly about: the patriots who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect what our nation was founded on — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

There are still so many people fighting for these basic rights today — the right to affordable health care, the right to have clean air and water, and the right to have equal access to education. But in these changing times, these inalienable rights are what unite and define who we are as Americans.

As we celebrate today, let’s recommit to fighting for our shared ideals and values.
