Dear Friend,

Vaccine distribution continues to be County staff, Board, and my focus. I want to share with you a video, update you on how we are working on this, and ask you to join me for a work session today at 3 pm.

Right now, approximately 50 percent of Virginians are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine under 1b priority. However, the state is only receiving 122,000 doses per week, which have to be distributed across the 8 million people in the Commonwealth. Beginning last week, Arlington’s expected to receive at least 2,750 vaccine doses per week. Slightly more to come this week, but not as much as we need and want.

Demand for vaccine is greater than vaccine availability in Arlington County. That is leading to some of the questions regarding a delay in scheduling and shortage of appointments. We are rescheduling and we have staff ready to do as many as 14-thousand vaccinations a week. We just need additional doses.

Some have asked if Arlington is using our doses. 10 days ago, Arlington County was at close to 89 percent of first doses out—exactly where we want to be. We always want to leave a little supply as a buffer until we receive the next week’s shipment. We will be continuing to monitor that number and will do so again today at 3 pm at our vaccine town hall. Go here, then: [link removed] to learn more

Vaccine--Frequently Asked Questions ([link removed])
Big picture, vaccine supply in our country remains a challenge, but we expect it will increase gradually over the coming months, and we have already seen an increase as President Biden engages. In addition, Arlington has joined the other Northern Virginia jurisdictions in requesting more vaccines for our region—and we hope those requests will come through.

Part of increasing supply is good data. The button below links to the Virginia Department of Health's website on vaccines. Currently, there is a slight lag on reporting of some vaccines distributing, which we hope will be addressed through state and local work that we are focused on. It is getting better and is the best way to see our progress over the coming weeks.

We will continue to work flat out on vaccines. It is our top priority by far and we are bringing our full resources and commitment to it.

If you have questions, the best way to reach me via email is [email protected] or [email protected]

Sincerely,

Matt
