Dear John,
Thank you for all of your support in the fight to end Alzheimer's disease. Today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's — and that number continues to grow. This debilitating disease is not only devastating lives but also putting an enormous burden on our health care system.
Advocacy is one of our most powerful tools to fight for the needs and rights of those impacted by this devastating disease — and today, I urge you to make your voice heard.
It's up to us to make sure our elected officials keep Alzheimer's research funding at the top of their priority lists. As a member of our community, will you raise your voice in support of this critical need by sending a message urging your members of Congress to join the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease today?
When your members of Congress join the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease, they will have the opportunity to propose legislation regarding crucial funding and advance needed policy reforms that would potentially slow the trajectory and lessen the impact of this disease. Founded in 1999, the task force was established to advance research and public awareness of Alzheimer's by bringing the disease to the forefront of the congressional agenda.
Alzheimer's has no boundaries. The number of lives taken from this devastating disease increased by 146% between 2000 and 2018. Put most simply, Alzheimer's threatens to continue to destroy our families and financially burden our health care system if we don't change the trajectory of this disease.
By adding your voice, you are helping to inspire our leaders to take bold action to address the Alzheimer's crisis. Thanks to the strong bipartisan champions, Congress:
- Passed the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA). NAPA's unanimous passage led to the development of the first-ever National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.
- Helped secure historic funding for Alzheimer's and dementia research at the National Institutes of Health, resulting in a seven-fold increase in funding since the passage of NAPA.
- Advocated for the more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's and their caregivers who provided nearly $244 billion in unpaid care in 2019.
Thank you for your support as we continue to fulfill our mission to lead the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.
When we act together, we will make a difference,
John Funderburk
Vice President, Advocacy
Alzheimer's Association
P.S. It is imperative that our congressional leaders understand the importance of developing policies to overcome Alzheimer's disease through increased investment in research, enhanced care and improved support. Urge your members of Congress to take a leadership role in this critical work by joining the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease today.
