As former Secretaries of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius and I understand the critical role HHS plays in our country’s health policy. As thousands of Americans die of COVID-19 each day, it’s imperative that the Senate confirms Xavier Becerra as President Biden’s Health and Human Services Secretary.

HHS oversees the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, which includes Dr. Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The department plays a critical role in our testing, vaccination, and public awareness campaigns. It’s irresponsible to weather this storm without a strong leader like Becerra at the helm.

Xavier Becerra is eminently qualified for the role. For him, public health is personal. Before he helped pass the Affordable Care Act, his district in California had the country’s second highest uninsured rate. He’s spent his career in Congress and as California Attorney General expanding access to high-quality, affordable healthcare.

Xavier Becerra will help us fight COVID-19 and fight for affordable healthcare. The Senate should confirm him as quickly as possible.
