John, We all know the inspirational story of my friend and Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who won her 2018 race in New York after a courageous and empowering campaign. AOC was a working class underdog who took on not just a longtime incumbent, but the system itself. I am proud to stand alongside her and other Brand New Congress (BNC) candidates like Cori Bush and my friend and fellow Chicagoan Robert Emmons, Jr. AOC represents a movement that is exactly what this country needs: an army of progressives building momentum through our 100% grassroots campaigns. Like AOC, we represent the true nature of our home districts—everyday people of diverse backgrounds whose challenges have been neglected by the government. I’ve taught right here in Illinois’ 7th District for ten years and witnessed the results of an apathetic government, like systemic poverty, environmental racism, and gun violence. Only by electing a literally brand new Congress will we ever have a government that works for the people because it was designed by the people. AOC’s election was a foot in the door of a system in which the average American could only dream of being a part. Now, my fellow BNC candidates and I are ready to kick down that door entirely. We hope you’ll support our movement by supporting our campaign. We’re just a few days from the 9/30 FEC reporting deadline, when our fundraising numbers will be made public. Every dollar you give matters. Remember, it’s only with the support of people like you that we will ever make the changes that everyday people so desperately need.
