PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

It's #BlackHistoryMonth. Be sure you're following us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for great content each day to uplift and celebrate Black and African-American history and culture.

Now, here are this week's Support, Education, and Advocacy opportunities to connect!

Q Chat Space meetings for youth of color

Q Chat Space Groups for Youth of Color

It's Black History Month, and while there's much to celebrate, it's also a good time to remember that queer youth of color are in need of outlets for support from their peers. Enter Q Chat Space, a collaboration of PFLAG National, CenterLink, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Q Chat Space provides online discussion groups for LGBTQ+ teens ages 13 to 19, where everyone is chatting during the same pre-scheduled time.

There are multiple groups each week for youth of color--including Spanish-language chats--all facilitated by experienced staff who work at LGBTQ+ centers around the country.

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate for Black History Month (While You're Stuck At Home)

  1. Learn: Take the time to learn about the stories and accomplishments of Black LGBTQ+ heroes and pioneers – all year long. If you’re not sure where to start, Gwen Aviles and Ariel Jao published an article, for NBC News, last February titled 16 queer black pioneers who made history.

  2. Watch: There are countless films that celebrate the stories of Black LGBTQ+ activists and advocates. PFLAG recommends documentaries like Brother Outsider about the life of Bayard Rustin, I am Not Your Negro about the life of James Baldiwn, and Pay it No Mind about the life of Marsha P Johnson.
  3. Share: Use social media to elevate the voices and stories of Black LGBTQ+ advocates making history right now. These articles from Essence and Do Something will help you get connected with these young game changers on Instagram.

Last chance: Call your Senators and tell them to vote YES to confirm Pete Buttigieg

After receiving overwhelming bipartisan support in the Senate Commerce Committee, Pete Buttigieg's nomination goes to the full Senate for a confirmation vote, likely tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2nd.

Take Action now, and tell your two Senators to vote YES to confirm Pete Buttigieg!
