John --

Just months ago, millions of people took action across the United States (and the globe) to proclaim in one voice that Black Lives Matter -- sparking the racial justice movement that reignited in the wake of George Floyd's murder that is now being called the largest movement in American history.

For the first time in recent memory, social and economic injustice, police brutality, and racism became issues regularly discussed across kitchen tables and in Congress alike.

Folks started holding uncomfortable but necessary conversations with their circles and themselves. Questions like, how did we get here? What can be done? Am I part of the problem? Can we take this movement further than just saying "Black Lives Matter"? And most importantly: What can I do to help change things for the better?

People were coming to terms with what Black folks already knew: racial injustice isn't a Black issue; it's an American issue. And until our country fully confronts its original sins of racism, sexism, and classism -- we can never truly move forward.

This Black History Month, I want to encourage all of us to take a look at the present -- at the history that is in the making. We are living history right now, John, and as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

It's time we rise to the challenge. This Black History Month, I encourage you to stay engaged in this movement for racial and social justice. And if you're able, you can join me in supporting the vital work of local organizations like Philly We Rise and Black Lives Matter Philly.
