Democrats have control of the House and Senate. (Are you tired of hearing that yet? Didn't think so.)

But the Democratic majority is razor-thin, and the filibuster still threatens to impede the progress we've been pushing for. The filibuster—an archaic Senate "rule" that's nowhere in the Constitution—effectively gives Republicans veto power over legislation by requiring bills to have the support of 60 senators in order to be brought to a vote.

As long as the filibuster—or the fossil fuel filibuster, as we sometimes call it—remains in place, so do all of our plans to make bold change during this administration. That's why we're calling to eliminate it.

President Biden is doing what he can to address climate change through executive orders. But executive orders are temporary. They don't always last beyond the administration that issued them, and they're no replacement for bold, legally binding legislation.

To make progress on climate change, voting rights, gun control, immigration reform, statehood for D.C. and Puerto Rico, and so much more, we can do one of two things: We can wait endlessly for Republicans to have a change of heart (so we can reach that 60-vote threshold more easily, more often), or eliminate the filibuster (so Democrats can pass legislation with a simple majority).

We're going to have far more success with the latter.

There are signs that the filibuster could be in its waning days. In negotiating a power-sharing agreement with new Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell asked for a guarantee that the filibuster would remain in place for at least two years. He knows just how "dangerous" a filibuster will be to the fossil fuel interests that power his campaigns. Leader Schumer knows better than making that promise.

Support for ending the filibuster is growing among Democratic senators, and we need to encourage those who are still on the fence to support it while they have the power. They need to hear from Americans who are calling for action loudly. They need to hear from you.
