On the campaign trail last year, Joe Biden promised to improve access to a quality education and lessen the financial burden of student loan debt on millions of people in the United States. Now we expect President Biden to keep his promises.
Roughly 45 million people in the United States hold a total of $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. Amid a deadly pandemic and economic disaster, people need immediate relief from burdensome debt.
Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren have already called on President Biden to eliminate $50,000 in student debt via an executive order. Though we won’t rest until all federal student loan debt is eliminated, this would be a great start.

The rising costs of higher education impact us all. Student debt takes away from our ability to pay for food, housing, health care, and to start saving for our future.
Additionally, many borrowers who didn’t graduate still have to worry about making costly loan payments -- oftentimes deterring them from returning to complete their degree. No one benefits when skilled students are unable to complete their education or launch their careers for financial reasons.
Furthermore, racial and gender inequalities in higher education translate to student loans as well -- Black and brown Americans and women disproportionately hold student debt, yet are too often not given the same financial resources as other borrowers.
Even if you already paid off your loans or aren’t a borrower yourself, eliminating $1.6 trillion in debt for millions of working families is an enormous economic opportunity for us all -- finally allowing our friends, family members, and neighbors to buy a house, start their own business, or simply put food on the table. It’s an important first step toward making a higher education within reach for everyone.
