Friend,
Black History Month is an important time to commemorate and honor the enduring legacies of leaders in the Black community who have shaken the nation as they stood for a more just and equitable society for all.
From the foot soldiers of the civil rights movement like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ella Baker, to literary geniuses like Maya Angelou, to trailblazers like Shirley Chisholm and President Obama to leaders in our own communities, like the late Sen. Joe Neal -- our nation will forever be in awe of the change these brave individuals commanded.
In 2020, the long struggle Black Americans have faced in our country for over 400 years was illuminated. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many more Americans cannot be forgotten or ignored.
As Americans confront the systemic and individual discrimination that Black Americans continue to face -- we continue to forge a movement of unity and solidarity that demands change.
These moments have brought Americans to use their collective voice to peacefully call for progress in policy, and we’re seeing it come to fruition with the Biden Administration as they take action to promote fair housing policies and to tear down inequities facing our communities.
Rather than confine it to one month, let February be the kickstart of what should be a year-round celebration of the stories and contributions of Black Americans. Moving forward, we can celebrate Black Lives by using every opportunity to amplify Black voices and accomplishments.
This past year alone, we saw the first Black woman -- Kamala Harris -- elected as Vice President, the first Black Senator from Georgia -- Reverend Raphael Warnock, Jr. -- elected, and the first Black Secretary of Defense -- Lloyd Austin -- appointed.
Let’s take this month to reflect on the achievements and celebrate with the African American community, while committing to the continued work of celebrating differences and creating a more equitable community and country.
In solidarity,
Susie
