Friend,

When we talk about Black History Month, we talk about a lot of firsts – the first Black President Barack Obama, the first Black Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first Black IDP Chair Ross Wilburn.

I’m happy to be in such fine company as the first Black woman to be elected (and re-elected!) Vice Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, but our duty going forward is to make sure we’re not the last and to build a bench of talented people to take up the torch.

Today, I’m asking you to dig deep and chip in $28 right now to honor the many firsts and invest in those who will come after us. Your contribution will help us register more Democrats than ever before, recruit top-notch candidates who fight for everyday Iowans, and expand our base.

Black History Month always reminds me of the gains that our community has made from the Voting Rights Act to the Plan for a More Perfect Union right here in Iowa. But there is still so much to do if we’re going to build a better future where every Iowan – no matter what we look like or where we come from – has the chance to succeed.

Every dollar counts when it comes to fighting for equal rights – are you in, friend?

Happy Black History Month!

Sincerely,
June Owens, Vice Chair
