Dear John,

On behalf of Lawyers Defending American Democracy (LDAD), thank you for following and joining in our work.

LDAD was formed two years ago, when a small group of us, on the occasion of our 50th reunion at Harvard Law School, decided to create an organization whose mission was to mobilize our fellow lawyers and leaders of our profession to protect and defend core legal and democracy principles against what appeared to be a systematic assault on the rule of law. The silence of our profession in the face of this assault was, to us, stunning.

Thanks to you and our Steering Committee of pro bono lawyers who volunteer their time to author and lead our advocacy work, we have been able to gain some national recognition and stature.

Today, for example, we notified the Grievance Committee of the Supreme Court of the State of New York that over 7,200 lawyers and non-lawyers joined our ethics complaint against Rudy Giuliani ([link removed]) in just eight days. This, along with the extensive media coverage ([link removed]) of the submission of that complaint, has capped two years of a surprisingly rapid rise in LDAD’s visibility and impact.

We'd like to do more, and many of you have written to ask us to do more. But, in order to do more, we must augment our resources to support and supplement the time and talent of our dedicated Steering Committee ([link removed]) volunteers.

For this reason, I ask you to consider making a financial contribution to LDAD. We are attempting to raise funds in the next few weeks to hire staff and expand our legal research, media, and communications functions. These funds are critical to ensuring that we capitalize on our successes to date and continue to try to fulfill our mission: to defend and protect the fundamental and core tenets of our democracy and the rule of law.

Thank you for consideration, and THANK YOU for your personal dedication to our mission and the core principles of our democracy which are, tragically, under siege.

Signed,

Scott Harshbarger
Chairman and Co-founder, Lawyers Defending American Democracy

NOTE: LDAD is currently a 501(c)(4) organization, so donations are not tax-deductible.
