Week of February 1st, 2021

The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real.

We need to be extra vigilant and mitigate the risks of infection, particularly for those who are older or who have pre-existing conditions. For the sake of our collective health, please remember to wear a mask when you leave your home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. This pandemic has shown us that the health of one is the health of all so we all need to take responsibility for our common well-being.

There are some easy ways to safely stay connected to the chapter, such as: signing-up on the front page of our website to receive our weekly newsletter, checking the calendar on the site for upcoming virtual events, and joining DSA-LA’s Slack.

In solidarity,

DSA-LA

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Don't Miss The Chance To Vote To Endorse Daniel Lee For State Senate (D-30)!

Image

The petition for DSA-LA to endorse DSA member Daniel Lee for CA Senate District 30 passed! This special election to replace Holly Mitchell in CA Senate District 30 is coming up FAST, so there's a tight timeline to secure the chapter’s endorsement and we need your help. Members in Good Standing should check their inboxes for a ballot from Survey Monkey so we can help Daniel Lee get the people power of DSA-LA behind him in this critical election!

Lee is the first Black Council Member of Culver City and currently serves as Vice Mayor. He is a DSA member and shares our values and agenda on housing, healthcare, the environment and police abuse. He takes no money from fossil fuels or cops, and has been endorsed by Sunrise LA. His opponent is Assembly member Sydney Kamlager-Dove, who supported Bloomberg for President and has been weak on housing and other critical issues.

Timeline:

Sunday, Jan 31 - Ballots sent in the morning to members in good standing.

Tuesday, Feb 2 - Voting closes in the morning, vote result announced, if endorsed self-   nominations for the campaign working group co-chairs will be accepted in the afternoon.

Wednesday, Feb 3 - Voting for campaign working group co-chairs will begin in the afternoon.

Thursday, Feb 4 - Working group co-chairs will be announced in the afternoon.

If you would like to volunteer to work on the campaign should the endorsement pass, please email [email protected] and put “Working Group Volunteer” in the subject line so we can pass it along to the working group co-chairs.

Help Build Language Justice in DSA-LA!

You do not need to be bi- or multi-lingual to help build language justice (LJ)! We need folks who are willing to do some admin work and some educational work, folks who aren't necessarily translators or interpreters but care about LJ. No matter how many or few languages you speak, please respond to this email if you would like to be added to the Language Justice Google Group and are willing to do some of this work!

Many of us had questions surrounding tenant organizing, luckily our friends from the Housing and Homelessness committee have all the answers. Any and all are encouraged to join us for a Tenant Organizing Workshop so we can start building the power we need to #CancelRent in 2021 and beyond!

DSA National Event: DSA, BDS, and Palestine Solidarity

Image

Saturday, February 6th @ 12:00PM PT

Palestine is not only a humanitarian issue, nor is it only a Palestinian issue. Palestine is a political issue with serious consequences at stake for both Palestinians and average US residents. As socialists, we recognize the interconnectedness of our struggles under capitalism. In solidarity with Palestinian civil society’s nonviolent struggle for equality, human rights, and self-determination, DSA adopted a resolution at our national convention in 2017 in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. In 2019, DSA reaffirmed its commitment to the BDS movement by voting to establish a BDS and Palestine Solidarity national working group.

Join us for a discussion and Q&A with special guests, including Omar Barghouti, Marc Lamont Hill, Sumaya Awad, and Ajamu Amiri Dillahunt, to discuss the growing and vibrant global BDS Movement, Palestine solidarity, censorship, and how socialists can join the fight!
