John, you can help change five young lives today

Dear John,

As the world marked World Education Day (24th January), many of you will have been struggling with home-schooling or missing out on education yourselves. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is about the power of education and the importance of uninterrupted learning.

No one knows this better than refugees. Currently, only 3% of refugees are in higher education.

That’s well below the global average, even without a pandemic, and too many refugees are being denied the opportunities and futures that education can unlock.

This is why we launched a crowdfunding campaign in December, which you may remember reading about. We have already funded two full four-year scholarships – which is amazing - but we are determined to reach our target of five before the new semester.

It’s like Mohammad, a Syrian refugee Education student in Zaatari camp, Jordan says himself - the power of education goes far beyond the individual:

University students in the camp are role models for the younger ones. They look up to us. My journey, having received scholarships for my studies and having graduated with a master's degree, can inspire some of them, can give them hope.”

There are only a few days left to fund three more refugee scholars. So we’re asking people like you, who care about refugees, to join us and share – it will make all the difference!

The worlds brightest minds are out there with many of the answers to our world’s problems – climate change, poverty and pandemics. By investing in the young people of today, we are putting our faith in a future that is full of possibilities – something that gives us all reasons to be hopeful.
Thank you,

P.S. Have a look at Adhieu’s story on UNHCR’s Instagram. Adhieu is a South Sudanese refugee entrepreneur who studied business on a scholarship in Kenya. She took over our global social media channels to answer questions about her studying and how her business has been operating through the pandemic.
