Chicago history is Black History.
We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.
John,
From Fred Hampton to Ida B. Wells, Rube Foster to Bessie Coleman, Wilson Frost to Harold Washington, Barack Obama to Timuel Black, to hundreds of others — Chicago wouldn’t be Chicago without the achievements, contributions, and legacy of Black Chicagoans.
Their legacy lives on in 2021. Kamala Harris became the first Black, South Asian woman Vice President. Lloyd Austin became the first Black Secretary of Defense. We have the most diverse Congress and Cabinet in history.
But as we celebrate these achievements, I think of my old friend Harold Washington, who struggled against racial inequity to become the first Black mayor of Chicago. It is on his shoulders — and the shoulders of all who struggled for racial justice in Chicago — that our battle for progress rests.
There is no better way to celebrate Black History Month than continuing the hard work Black leaders started. We need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act to protect all Americans’ right to vote and eliminate every remnant of Jim Crow policy. It is up to us to keep paving the way for change and speak out for racial equity and justice.
As Fredrick Douglass said, “if there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Together we will stand strong and be a voice for progress, for racial equity and justice for all.
¡Sí se puede!
