Dear John,
Demand the U.S. government end financing fossil fuel projects overseas to protect endangered species and vital ecosystems!
|
Last week President Biden signed an executive order that called for an end to international fossil fuel financing. This is a step toward reducing fossil fuel pollution in sensitive ecosystems worldwide -- but we need to keep pressure on the Biden Administration to follow through. Take action now.
The U.S. government -- through obscure agencies like the Export-Import Bank and the International Development Finance Corporation -- provides billions of dollars every year for fossil fuel projects abroad. These taxpayer dollars have gone toward projects that harm people and endangered species.
We need your help, John, to protect communities, sensitive ecosystems and wildlife from fossil fuel projects.
Take Action: Demand President Biden end overseas fossil fuel financing.
The projects that EXIM and other agencies finance include coal, oil and gas projects. They are driving the disappearance of critical wilderness areas and ecosystems. Without urgent action to safeguard biodiversity and wildlife, around 1 million species face extinction in the next few decades.
These banks have a choice to incentivize, mitigate, or prevent the major drivers of biodiversity loss. Historically, they have incentivized the destruction -- but President Biden’s announcement presents an opportunity to change that.
Unfortunately, President Biden’s order still has loopholes or exceptions. We cannot let another administration waste more time talking about plans or coming up with small steps to reduce this financing. Sea turtles, Tapanuli orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and other species can’t wait.
Sign now: Tell President Biden to stop overseas fossil fuel projects to protect threatened wildlife.
Over the past decade, the U.S. government has provided tens of billions of dollars for dirty projects from Mozambique to Mexico with disastrous impacts.
These devastating projects disrupt the path of migratory species, endanger whale breeding grounds, and continue to put countless other threatened species at risk throughout the world.
For years, Friends of the Earth members like you have been advocating for the U.S. government to end this lifeline to fossil fuel companies operating abroad. Now is your chance to finally stop this stream of money once and for all!
Demand that the Biden Administration end its support for overseas fossil fuel projects immediately.
Standing with you,
Kate DeAngelis,
International finance program manager,
