Dear Friend,

Today is the first day of Black History Month—a month dominated by stories of great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Harriet Tubman. While we sing their praises, we must also remember those who aren’t famous. Those who are shaping our history with their courage and resilience right now: Black immigrants.

Take a few minutes to start a Facebook fundraiser today for Immigration Equality’s work on behalf of queer, Black asylum seekers.

Hundreds of queer Jamaicans seek asylum in the U.S. each year, escaping homophobic, deadly mob attacks. My own parents are Jamaican immigrants, and as a lesbian myself, I often wonder: what if I grew up there? I only need to hear the stories of some of Immigration Equality’s 100+ Jamaican clients to know it could be life-threatening.

No one should live in fear of being their true self. Ever. Save lives by taking a few minutes to start a Facebook fundraiser today for Immigration Equality.

We have to root out racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia everywhere, and we need you to join us. Immigration Equality is supporting racial justice by using their platforms to speak out against the assault on Black bodies in this country. Please support their work for Black asylum seekers who survived horrors in their countries of origin—and who need our advocacy in the U.S., too.

What if we all contributed something—big or small—to Immigration Equality in honor of Black History month?

Easy answer: We would be able to help save the lives of hundreds more Black asylum seekers.

Sincerely,
