When you’re dealing with crooks, you follow the money.

John,

It’s the story of two whistleblowers. But there’s one uniting theme: Russia, money and election meddling.

Each day, we learn more about the national intelligence whistleblower and Donald Trump’s blatant attempt to dig up dirt on political rival Joe Biden. But there’s another whistleblower’s account that deserves serious attention―and both may point back to (you guessed it) Russia.

In his phone call with the Ukrainian President, Trump directly addressed a right-wing conspiracy theory that tries to let the Russians off the hook for their meddling in the 2016 election. In the released phone transcript, Trump references cybersecurity firm “CrowdStrike,” which reviewed the hacking of the DNC servers. I won’t get into that ridiculous conspiracy theory here (feel free to Google CrowdStrike and Ukraine), but the gist of it is that a DNC insider, not Russia, hacked the DNC’s servers. (I know, it makes no sense….)

The lesser-known whistleblower who has gotten little attention appears to be an employee of the IRS. That person indicated to Congress that they found “evidence of possible misconduct” and “inappropriate efforts” in the IRS’s legally mandated annual audit of the president’s tax returns.[1]

Trump’s tax returns, you say? Well, yes. Trump is not only hiding them from the American people, but also, possibly, interfering in an official, annual IRS audit of a president’s returns.

Why would Trump care about this? Does it point to money laundering for Russian oligarchs? Decades of tax evasion? Other ties to foreign governments or mobsters? We’re not sure.

But one thing we do know is that when you’re dealing with crooks, you follow the money.

Americans for Tax Fairness is leading the national charge to release Trump’s tax returns to the American people. And Congress’ impeachment inquiry may be our best bet yet.
