Friend, Last year, gun violence surged to record levels. And with nearly 1.5 million firearms sold in Pennsylvania in 2020, that violence will keep climbing without action. On March 23rd, citizens, survivors, faith leaders, violence intervention groups, and numerous other organizations will gather for the first ever statewide, virtual advocacy day. More details about trainings, key issues, meetings and a rally will be coming soon. Step 1 for you: sign up. Join CeaseFirePA and partners for our first ever virtual lobby day and make sure your voice is heard in Harrisburg. RSVP today. WHAT: Virtual Advocacy Day For Gun Safety WHEN: Tuesday, March 23rd at 9 AM- 4 PM WHERE: From your computer at home. We’ll email you links and more details. In the age of zoom, this has a chance to bring together the most diverse group of citizens ever to advocate for safer communities. We’ll provide the technology, give you the talking points, and answer any other questions you may have. The pandemic has halted in person advocacy, but I know your commitment together to end gun violence is stronger than every. We’ll be advocating for: - Extreme Risk Protection Orders will create a legal process for family members or law enforcement to temporarily remove access to guns if someone is at risk of harming themselves or others.
- Mandatory reporting of lost or tolen firearms will crackdown on a major source of guns used in violent crimes: loss, theft, and straw purchasers – people who buy guns and then sell them illegally to people who can’t buy them on their own.
- Universal Background Checks will make sure every gun buyer has a background check. Currently, people can buy long guns, including rifles, shotguns and semi-automatic military-style rifles without one if sold by a private citizen.
- Defending existing gun violence prevention policies and pushing for more funding for community violence intervention programs.
Your legislators need to hear from you. We hope you will join us and Pennsylvanians across the Commonwealth on March 24 as we take the case directly to our legislators. Sincerely, Adam Garber CeaseFirePA Executive Director |
