John, January has been a difficult month for all of us — and, in full transparency, that includes all of us at WFP. In a few moments, we're going to ask if you can chip in ahead of our end-of-month deadline at midnight. But before we do, we wanted to reflect on the gravity of this moment.
We kicked off January much like our December ended — organizing like our lives depended on it to bring victory home for Raphael Warnock and the Democratic ticket in Georgia. And we did it!
Then literally just a few hours later, thousands of white supremacist insurrectionists — incited and led by a sitting president — stormed the U.S. Capitol grounds in Washington D.C. in an attempt to violently overturn the presidential election results. 147 members of Congress who joined in inciting the attack remain in Congress to this day.
In addition to everything else, the pandemic has continued to rage, affecting all of us in ways big and small. More working families are sliding further and further into poverty, and they need jobs and care now.
Through it all, we are still finding reasons to be hopeful. With Democratic control of the White House, the Senate, and the House, we have a window of opportunity in the next few weeks to tackle the multiple crises we are facing. But between the Republican obstruction and the billionaire class pushing back, we know it's not going to happen all on its own.
We need to keep up the fight for accountability, justice, and relief. AND we need to start laying the groundwork to elect even more leaders in 2021 and 2022 who will be part of our movement for a nation that cares for us all.
All of this is no small order. But the future we want can be ours if we come together and fight for it right now.
We're facing our first fundraising deadline of the year at midnight tonight, and every contribution makes a difference. Can you rush a contribution of $5 or whatever you can afford toward our $25,000 goal so we can keep up this work?
