Dear John,

I need your help again to speak up and urge accountability for inappropriate behavior by someone in power. Can you take a minute to help? OLCV has joined a growing list of elected officials, organizations, and other individuals who work in and around the Oregon Capitol in calling for Representative Diego Hernandez to be held accountable by the legislature.

In case you haven’t seen it in the news, a recently released report (compiled after a thorough independent investigation) details how Rep. Diego Hernandez created an "intimidating, hostile, and offensive" work environment. The report is disturbing to read, and the behavior by Rep. Hernandez is unacceptable. His abuse of power absolutely should not be brushed under the rug.

The women who came forward should be commended for their bravery. They along with every one of us deserve to feel safe where we work. We have a right to work free from harassment, intimidation, and any abusive behaviors from others. OLCV is committed to speaking up to ensure everyone feels safe in the workplace. It’s especially important when the inappropriate behavior comes from someone in power. Will you join us in asking for accountability?

On Monday, the House Committee on Conduct will be meeting to discuss the report and to make recommendations on how to move forward. Will you submit public testimony urging them to take action? We made it easy to submit testimony and email your state representative at the same time. Just click here: [link removed]. We have sample language you can send, or you can personalize it.

If you believe everyone deserves a safe workplace and that those in power must be held accountable when they abuse that power, then speak up today. Sadly, Rep. Hernandez has refused to recognize the harm he’s caused, and he continues to deflect and to blame others, despite clear evidence. And, while it's crucial to acknowledge the role of racism in double standards when it comes to our justice system and the court of public opinion, we can't ignore the seriousness of these incidents of harassment.

The women who stepped forward deserve justice, and all people in the Oregon State Capitol should have the right to feel safe and secure. The right to do their jobs without worrying about this happening again. The right to speak up and be heard. By taking action, we can help set the precedent that this is not okay, and that there will be consequences for harassment. If you can, please submit testimony today before the House Committee on Conduct meets on Monday, and urge the committee and your state representative to do the right thing and hold Rep. Hernandez accountable.

Thank you,
Lindsey Scholten
Deputy Director, OLCV
