Dear NRDC Activist,
Serious learning disabilities and loss of intelligence. Poor impulse
control. Developmental delays. Hearing impairment.
These are just a handful of the symptoms suffered by children who have
been poisoned by lead-tainted drinking water.
Trump's EPA knew this but still refused to safeguard America's children
from this devastating — and completely avoidable — harm. Rather than
setting safeguards to ensure that we keep lead out of drinking water, they
delayed key requirements and even refused to require the removal of most
of the millions of lead service lines that are still in use in communities
around the country.
NRDC is fighting to restore life-saving protections for safe drinking
water, and we're pushing the Biden administration to take immediate action
to reverse Trump's destructive policies. [ [link removed] ]But we need you with us.
Please make a monthly donation by TOMORROW, February 1, and every dollar
of your first three gifts will be MATCHED up to $330,000 >>
Contaminated drinking water is not a hypothetical problem — it plagues
communities across the country.
Two years ago, lead in Newark, New Jersey's drinking water registered at
some of the highest levels recently recorded by a large water system in
the United States.
NRDC and local partners have spent the last three years fighting in and
out of court to ensure Newark officials provide safe drinking water to
residents whose tap water has been contaminated with lead. Newark has made
major strides over the past year, but the work is not done. Just this
week, we reached a settlement with Newark that requires the city to
continue to rapidly remove and replace all lead service lines at no cost
to residents and continue measures to ensure residents will be protected
from lead in their water.
This is great for Newark, but tens of millions of people across the
country live in communities served by water systems that are contaminated
by pollution or violate the EPA's already weak Lead and Copper Rule. And
Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities, and low-income communities, are
disproportionally plagued by unsafe drinking water. We cannot let this
injustice stand.
With the election of President Joe Biden, we finally have an opportunity
to reverse the damage inflicted by Trump's racist, pro-polluter
administration and push for stronger federal protections to ensure
everyone has access to safe, affordable drinking water.
And with your help, we're also asking that President Biden makes it a
priority to reverse Trump's rollback of the National Environmental Policy
Act, which would restore the rights of local communities to protect
themselves under federal law from polluting projects.
[ [link removed] ]You can help power NRDC's urgent work to protect clean water, clean
air, and our planet by making a monthly gift. For this limited time, your
first three gifts will be MATCHED for double the impact on Biden's first
100 days in office.
Your support is so crucial that the daughter of NRDC Founding President
John Adams, Kate Adams, and her husband Duke Wiser and their family, have
committed to match your first three monthly gifts dollar for dollar until
February 1 (up to a total of $330,000).
Please hurry. We only have one more day to take advantage of this matching
gift opportunity and fight for every community to have a voice to protect
their children, their heath, and their environment.
Thank you for sticking with us. I know we can count on you to keep
fighting by our side.
Sincerely,
