Saturday Sept. 28 La ColectiVA is holding an open meeting at 3 PM at the Woodrow Wilson Library (6101 Knollwood Dr., Falls Church, VA 22041). This is a great chance to get connected to the work they're doing now, including the #CheckYourComplicity campaign to call out local elected officials supporting or supported by the agencies and companies running the deportation/detention machine, and the #UnitedAndFree campaign to prevent another migrant detention center from being built in Virginia and close down the others that are already here.Kaiser F

From NoVA Labor: Labor leader Sara Nelson will speak at NoVA Labor Saturday morning (Sept. 28) at 9 AM to inspire us at the launch of NoVA Labor’s canvass during this critical election season. Come for breakfast and then join us for our labor-to-labor walks and phone banks. Lunch will be served starting at noon. At: 4536 B John Marr Drive, Annandale. – Ginny Diamond

from MoCo DSA: Courageous whistleblower and Montgomery County resident Chelsea Manning is still in jail for refusing to testify at a grand jury about questions she has already answered and served jail time for. She will likely be jailed for another year and has $69,000 in fines already, with more added every day. Please donate to her legal fund so she can continue to fight this abuse of power.

Socialist Night School kicks off the fall semester in October with
Tuesday, October 15  6:30-8:30 PM
Introduction to Socialism: Socialist Night School
Cleveland Park Library  3310 Connecticut Ave NW · Washington, DC
For our first session of the new semester of Socialist Night School, we’ll tackle the question of socialism.
• What is capitalism?  • What is socialism? • How does what DSA does help us get there?
• How can you get involved (or more involved) in DSA?
While everyone is welcome, this session is designed for newer members and those who are relatively new to socialism. The session will be led by Socialist Night School co-organizer David Kaib.
Monday, October 28  6:30-8:30 PM
Financial Capitalism: Socialist Night School
The Festival Center  1640 Columbia Rd NW · Washington, DC
In the decade leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, booming banks, rising house prices and cheap consumer goods propped up living standards in the rich world. Thirty years of rocketing debt and financial wizardry had masked the deep underlying fragility of finance-led growth, and in 2008 we were forced to pay up.
The decade since has witnessed all kinds of morbid symptoms, as all around the rich world, wages and productivity are stagnant, inequality is rising, and ecological systems are collapsing.
In this session, Grace Blakely, author of Stolen: How to Save the World from Financialisation, will help us better understand the role of financialization in our current moment and what we can do to change course.

This session of Socialist Night School is jointly sponsored by Metro DC DSA and the Democracy Collaborative.
Coming in early November: Introduction to Marxism at the Socialist Night School.

Curious about Metro DC DSA? MDC DSA’s website has expanded resources on our chapter Campaigns, WGs and Caucuses – check it out here. Is your campaign, caucus or working group properly represented? Contact [email protected], attn: web managers.

MDC DSA Publications Schedule for October: This, the last Update for September, will be quickly followed by October Washington Socialist on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Updates in October will be published Fridays the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th and the November Washington Socialist will publish Friday, Nov. 1.
MDC DSA’s regular periodical publications are managed by the Publications Working Group. Indicate interest in writing or other tasks to further socialist ideas and action by messaging [email protected] or visit our Slack channel, #publications, to see what we are up to. Our activism gains support when it is explained in a socialist context and voice, so check our submission guidelines, and add your voice to the mix. What shows up in the Washington Socialist? See the Index for 2016-18 and the supplemental the Washington Socialist Index for January-August 2019.
