"All military commanders normally have immediate response authority to protect property, life, and in my case, federal functions -- federal property and life, but in this instance I did not have that authority," says Maj. Gen. William J. Walker, the commanding general of the DC National Guard.

We know the delay in response times was no accident -- the Trump-led Department of Defense reportedly placed restrictions on Gen. Walker's authority without reason, just before the Jan. 6 attack occurred. These new guidelines not only hindered the National Guard's response time, costing multiple lives, but also stripped Gen. Walker of the authority to immediately send in the 40 National Guard members who were waiting nearby as reinforcements.

One thing is certain -- this attack on our democracy can never happen again.

Republicans have shown that they are willing to risk the lives of police officers, their supporters, and even Senate and House members if it means maintaining their presidential power. If they're willing to risk that much right now, how much more are they going to sacrifice to regain complete political control in 2022?

We know we can prevent something like this from ever happening again by ensuring that qualified and capable leaders are placed in the Pentagon, but to do that we need to maintain our narrow control of the House and Senate.

Together, we can show the GOP that violence and hostile takeovers have no place in our government, but we're in for a long fight. Now is the time to reinvest in our progressive champions and support candidates who are willing to stand up for our democracy. Unfortunately, we're already falling behind on our fundraising goals.
