** It's time for a National Care Service
------------------------------------------------------------
Adult social care is not the most glamorous topic. Until it becomes an issue in their own lives, many people aren’t all that sure what it even is. When some people find out that it involves things like washing and dressing older people, they become uncomfortable – it isn’t the sort of thing we like to think too much about.
But we really do need to think about it – we have an ageing population, with more people living longer lives and therefore needing more support. This support doesn’t come cheap and some older people find themselves burning through their life savings or are left struggling on their own as they don’t think that they can afford the care they need.
Added to this, almost ten years of Tory austerity have left adult social care in crisis. Since they came to power with the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives have cut an absolutely staggering £7.7 billion from adult social care budgets in England.
At the same time as the Tories slash budgets, they have failed time and again to come up with any solutions. Two and a half years ago, the then-Chancellor Philip Hammond said that they would publish a “green paper” setting out their proposals by the end of 2017. They missed that deadline. Then they said summer 2018. They missed that deadline. Then it was autumn of 2019. Then it was winter. Then April 2019… You get the idea – astonishingly they still haven’t produced it!
Whilst the Tories dither and fumble, older people who need care and their families are being pushed through a system that just doesn’t work. I’m sure you’ll all agree that this just isn’t good enough.
Luckily, there is a party – Labour – that is taking this challenge seriously. At the Party Conference this week in Brighton, we announced that the next Labour Government will create a National Care Service. Modelled on one of our greatest achievements – the National Health Service – this would see England’s failing social care system replaced with one in which personal care is free at the point of use.
In other words, all over-65s who need it would receive help with washing, dressing and meals. There would also be an expansion of specialist dementia services and better training for staff. There is already a similar system in Scotland and I think that older people in Denton, Ashton and Stalybridge have just as much right to a decent care system as those in Dundee, Aberdeen and Stirling.
I hear from so many constituents about the terrible emotional and financial strains that are caused by the current care system – we need a National Care Service and we need it soon.
** Gwynne backs emergency services appreciation campaign
------------------------------------------------------------
Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has put his support behind the Awesome Movement, which encourages members of the public to show their appreciation for the emergency services.
The movement came about in 2018 after a rude note was left on the windscreen of an ambulance that was parked so that it could attend to a patient.
Members of the public are encouraged to show their appreciation for the work that the emergency services do, whether it’s stopping them in the street to say “Thank you”, buying them a coffee, leaving a kind note on the windscreen of an ambulance or writing a letter to their local Emergency Services.
This follows a recent wave of publicity surrounding assaults on members of the emergency services. In 2018, there were 26,295 reported assaults on the police, 933 on firefighters, 2,600 on paramedics and 948 on NHS nurses.
Andrew Gwynne said:
“The Awesome Movement is a fantastic idea.
“It is shocking how many members of our emergency services are attacked or abused whilst carrying out their work. These are the people who save our lives and they deserve our respect, admiration and appreciation.
“In the spirit of the Awesome Movement, I’d like to say how incredibly grateful I am to the amazing police officers, firefighters, paramedics and NHS staff who do such a great job for people in Denton and Reddish.”

Andrew in the Constituency
Thanks to the Denton Town Twinning Association for asking me to be their Honorary President. It was a pleasure to be the guest speaker for their "Tapas and Talk" fundraiser - lots of fun questions on everything from growing up in Denton through to life as an MP.
I had a brilliant visit to Moat House School in Heaton Norris. It's a fantastic small school (with a nursery) to help support, nurture and educate young mums. The staff are absolutely inspirational and you can see immediately why it's judged Outstanding by Ofsted!
I had a really positive meeting with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Friends of Denton and Reddish South Stations about restoring train services to our line. It's looking positive!
It was a pleasure to chair the AGM of the 4th Denton (St Anne's) Group Scouts Executive. Well done to Dan for giving us a presentation on his visit to the USA to the World Jamboree; and to my nephews, Harry and Leo on their investiture into Cubs.

After the Government was found to have unlawfully suspended Parliament on Tuesday, I made my way back to London, starting Wednesday morning with an emergency meeting of the Shadow Cabinet.

This week, I headed down to Brighton for Labour Party Conference. Conference is always a pretty exhausting experience as there's so much to do, but it's a fantastic opportunity to meet old and new friends, share ideas and hear from colleagues from around the country. I had to leave a day early to return to Parliament after the Supreme Court found that the Government had unlawfully shut down Parliament.
