"How Gerrymandering Will Protect Republicans Who Challenged the Election"
"Refusing to certify a fair election would be riskier for G.O.P. lawmakers if they needed to appeal to an electorate beyond their next set of primary voters."

Earlier this month, a majority of House Republicans voted to overturn our election -- even after our Capitol was besieged by insurrectionists. While deeply disturbing, it's unfortunately not surprising.
Half of the members who voted for the insurrectionists' agenda come from gerrymandered states. Because of this, many don't fear a general election -- they only fear a primary challenge from an even more extreme Republican. Even though the claims of voter fraud were baseless, these members of Congress cast cynical votes to protect their political futures.
They also knew that, even if their actions alienate voters, gerrymandering can keep them in power. Because of the way maps are currently drawn, Republicans are able to win a majority of elections, even when they only earn a minority of votes.
"The current maps favor Republicans; as a result, they have to win a smaller share of votes nationally in order to maintain control of the House, and therefore the speakership."

Help us secure fair maps >>> [link removed]
Friend, the effort to advocate for fair maps has never been more important. If we allow Republicans to manipulate maps again in 2021, we are likely to continue electing extreme politicians who pose an existential threat to our institutions.
Thanks to Democrats' new Senate majority, we have a chance to pass the For the People Act. This bill will make partisan gerrymandering illegal at the federal level. And, in addition to advocating for this bill, the NDRC and our affiliates will execute a state-by-state strategy to advocate for fair maps across the country as lines are redrawn this year.
If we achieve fair maps, we can force members who voted to undermine democracy to face real general election challenges. The NDRC is working to end the gerrymandering that rewards extreme politicians. Will you chip in today to help us meet our end-of-month goal and start 2021 off strong?
