Earlier this year the Trump administration authorized a timber sale in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. It is the largest timber sale by the Forest Service anywhere in the United States in 30 years. As is often the case with this administration, they tried to cut corners--in this case by not disclosing which specific locations would be targeted or what impacts logging would have there. This is illegal, so we took them to court.
On Monday we had our first major victory when a court ruling spared nearly 1,200 acres of old-growth rainforest on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska's Tongass National Forest.
But this is just the beginning. A total of 42,500 acres of temperate rainforest (an area roughly the size of Washington, D.C.) still hangs in the balance.
With your support, we'll continue working on behalf of our clients to defend these irreplaceable public lands, which safeguard our climate, provide habitat for wildlife, and offer enjoyment for all.
The Tongass has been called "America's Climate Forest" because of its ability to mitigate climate impacts by sequestering carbon. The clear-cutting approved by the Trump administration would transform carbon-storing old-growth forests into carbon emitters.

I've been working to protect the Tongass for 30 years -- and with you by my side, I'm not stopping now.
Sincerely,
Tom Waldo
