Republican Congressman Greg Steube has introduced a bill that would cut funding for school districts that continue to allow transgender girls to participate in school sports.
The most disturbing part of it all?
To “prove” their biological gender before being deemed eligible to play, underage girls might have to undergo physical exams by a doctor to confirm they are biologically female. You and I both know how deeply traumatizing this will be for hundreds of children, who deserve to be able to play sports without having their bodies subject to scrutiny.
This is not an isolated incident of cruelty. We've seen an overwhelming surge of anti-trans bills being introduced by Republicans in state legislatures across the nation -- the GOP-controlled Idaho state legislature was even successful in passing a stricter version of Stuebe's bill. It's become clear that Republicans will stop at nothing until they've gained control over both transgender individuals' and women's bodies.
We know that a future where people don't have to worry about discrimination is possible, and it starts by supporting unapologetically progressive representatives in every level of government.
Even though we kicked Trump out of office, GOP representatives continue to peddle their oppressive agenda by trafficking in misinformation and fear. And since Trump loyalists are still seeing continued support for their hatred and bigotry, they won't let up any time soon.
Together, we can show them that hateful and intolerant rhetoric has no place in our government, but we're in for a long fight. Now is the time to reinvest in our progressive champions so that President Biden can not only continue to repeal Trump's dangerous policies like the transgender military ban, but protect and expand transgender rights through the Equality Act as well.
