Executive actions provide protections for millions of LGBTQ people 
The first 10 days of the Biden administration provided a historic level of recognition and protection for LGBTQ people in the U.S. President Biden became the first-ever president to issue executive orders directly addressing LGBTQ people and LGBTQ rights on day one of his administration. Within the first 10 days, he had issued four.

On day one, President Biden issued an executive order protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination nationwide, extending federal protections to 13 million LGBTQ youth and adults. A second day-one order committed to advancing equity and better data collection for LGBTQ people and a third recognized the disparate impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ people. In his second week, President Biden ended the ban on transgender service members.
Other executive orders issued within the first 10 days affect LGBTQ immigrants, provide support for LGBTQ people experiencing economic insecurity, and increase access to health care for LGBTQ people.

1.2 million Black LGBT adults live in the US
An estimated 1.2 million adults in the U.S. identify as Black and LGBT, and one-third of them are raising children. Black LGBT people fare worse than their non-LGBT counterparts in many measures of economic and social vulnerability, including employment, income level, food insecurity, and healthcare access. In addition, Black LGBT adults face disparities in mental and physical health, such as depression, asthma, and disability.

Panelists will provide a brief history of civil commitment and the legal challenges to it and will discuss the need to address violence in our communities without further expanding mass incarceration.
