- Message from NARAL President, Ilyse Hogue -
If you’re like me, you watched with horror as armed insurrectionists (egged on by Trump and other elected officials) attacked our nation’s Capitol on January 6th. This dark day was the result of years of an unchecked right-wing stoking fear, spreading disinformation, and emboldening white supremacists. We can never heal and unite if we can’t acknowledge the harm that’s been done — which means convicting Trump so he can never again hold federal office and holding accountable all those responsible for inciting this insurrection.
While I was horrified — I wasn't shocked. NARAL has spent years immersed in the history of the Radical Right and how they intentionally weaponized abortion in service of their goals of halting social progress and maintaining white patriarchal control. At every step, they’ve relied on disinformation and propaganda. Too often, their most extreme elements have turned to violence. It’s no surprise that these same anti-choice leaders and activists helped promote — and in some cases even participated in — the insurrection.
We now have an opportunity to partner with an administration and Congress that understand the importance of reproductive freedom, will protect and expand access to abortion, and will work to restore our democracy. The fight is far from over and there’s still much to be done to ensure reproductive freedom truly is for every body. I hope you’re ready for what’s next!

Election 2020
Update from the Political Department
2021 marks the beginning of a new era with Democratic control of the White House, U.S. House, and U.S. Senate. After four years of Trump’s anti-choice extremism, we have a president who has vowed to support reproductive freedom. NARAL invested $34.7 million in our largest-ever electoral program and mobilized members across the country to help elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
|
 |
But that’s not all — Kamala Harris made history as the first woman, first Black, and first Indian American vice president — and while she’s the first, she will not be the last! Our movement has never been in a better position to dream big. We are looking forward to the future — a future where it won’t be remarkable when a woman of color is elected vice president.

Combatting Disinformation
Earlier this month, the world witnessed the power of disinformation and conspiracy theories when a mob of pro-Trump extremists attacked the U.S. Capitol after months of Trump and right-wing pundits and politicians peddling falsehoods about the 2020 election. The intricate connections between the anti-choice movement and the insurrection make it exceedingly clear that today's anti-choice movement and the Republican party's far-right, white supremacist fringes are are deeply entwined.

We launched digital ads in response to these attacks on our democracy, calling out the overlap between the white supremacist insurrectionists and anti-choice extremists.

The Biden Administration
Policy Priorities
President Biden has already begun reversing the anti-choice policies of the Trump administration, making good on his campaign promise to support reproductive freedom. On Thursday, he issued an executive order that revoked the global gag rule, directed the Department of Health and Human Services to begin the process of repealing the domestic gag rule and restoring Title X, and disavowed the Trump administration’s attacks on reproductive freedom around the world.
But this is just the beginning of what the Biden administration can and must achieve for reproductive freedom — they must release a budget that doesn’t include abortion coverage restrictions (like the discriminatory Hyde Amendment) and take swift action to remove unnecessary restrictions on medication abortion care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Take action now to urge the Biden administration to prioritize reproductive freedom!

The state of repro freedom
Iowa Spotlight
Instead of prioritizing our health and safety as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and safeguarding our democracy, anti-choice legislators in Iowa are moving to change the state constitution to restrict access to abortion.
Abortion access is under attack across the country and we need your support to be prepared before the next attack comes!

"The truth is: There can never be reproductive freedom until there is freedom from white supremacy. And the promise of Roe can never be realized without the complete destruction of white supremacy."
