Defender,
We have some incredible news to share: The world’s most endangered wolves just received a much-needed victory in their fight for survival!
Last week, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must resume releasing captive red wolves into the wild, giving the species new hope for recovery.
Backed by supporters like you, Defenders’ legal team and our coalition partners filed this case to help bolster red wolves’ wild population in eastern North Carolina and beyond. For years, this population has been dwindling as the Fish and Wildlife Service has neglected its duty to take action that would stop these incredibly vulnerable wolves from disappearing.
As a result of this ruling, the Fish and Wildlife Service has until March 1st, 2021 to develop a plan to resume releasing captive wolves into the Red Wolf Recovery Area in North Carolina. Adding these captive wolves to the wild population is expected to boost the population and help prevent red wolves from going extinct.
The all-out effort to save red wolves continues, but this ruling is an incredible step in the right direction – and we couldn’t have done it without your support!

Sincerely,
