For the Mollo people who live there, Indonesia’s Timor Island is valuable—not because of the oil, gas, gold, and marble reserves that extractive industries exploit, but because it is their home. Through the leadership of a community member and activist known as “Mama Aleta,” however, the Mollo people have resisted mining operations seeking to extract the island’s wealth without consent or renumeration. After decades of organizing, there are signs that policymakers are beginning to appreciate the central and leading role that Indigenous people and women must play in ensuring a just transition to a more sustainable and more equitable future.
