Hello, Friends —

The House was supposed to be in session this week, but House Democrat leadership canceled votes — thus allowing President Biden to govern exclusively by executive order.

When describing executive orders, frequently called EOs, President Obama famously said “I’ve got a pen, and I’ve got a phone.” But not even President Obama took it this far. President Biden has issued over 30 executive orders in his first week, more than any President in history.

Even the vigorously left-leaning New York Times has admonished President Biden for relying too heavily on EOs, saying “this is no way to make law.”

And indeed they are correct (for once). It is the Legislative Branch that makes the laws, not the Executive Branch. Executive orders circumvent Congress altogether — upending the system of checks and balances our Founders envisioned.

Nevertheless, the House is back in session next week. It’s high time that we get back to work!

STATEWIDE VACCINE APPOINTMENTS

On Friday, January 29, the State of Florida announced the launch of a statewide preregistration system to schedule COVID-19 vaccine appointment for eligible individuals: people 65 and older, frontline health care workers, and long-term care facility residents and staff.

Individuals can pre-register for vaccine appointments and be notified when appointments are available in their area by visiting myvaccine.fl.gov.

This website will allow individuals who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to be proactively contacted when vaccine appointments are available at state-supported vaccination sites. On the site, residents can select their county and submit their contact information. Once appointments are available, individuals will be contacted by phone call, text or email and will be assisted in scheduling an appointment.

Additionally, as part of the statewide registration system, each county has a designated phone number that individuals can call and pre-register if they do not have Internet access. The complete list of numbers is available here, and local numbers are below:

  • Escambia County: 866-201-1025

  • Okaloosa County: 866-200-3599

  • Santa Rosa County: 866-201-7110

  • Walton County: 866-201-3054

  • Holmes County: 866-201-3925

On January 21, State Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees issued a Public Health Advisory prioritizing vaccine in Florida for Florida residents. (The public health advisory is here). Please remember to bring proof of residency for any appointment.

LOCAL VACCINE INFORMATION

Baptist Health Care is working in partnership with Escambia and Santa Rosa counties to provide scheduling and clinical support for those counties’ vaccination events. On January 13, Baptist team members administered 522 vaccinations at an event in Gulf Breeze. Additional vaccination events will be scheduled as more supplies of the vaccine become available.

Additionally, eighteen Publix supermarkets across Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties have begun administering COVID-19 vaccines to residents 65 and older. Each location can administer 100-125 vaccine shots per day.

You must sign up for an appointment to receive a COVID vaccine shot. Please visit publix.com/covidvaccine for more information.

Finally, veterans in Northwest Florida can schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine through the Pensacola Veterans Affairs Clinic. Currently the vaccines are only being given to those over age 75 and first responders, but your name will be put on a list. Please call 228-523-4512 or visit here for more information.

LOCAL INSTALLATIONS RECEIVE R.E.P.I. FUNDS

NAS Whiting Field has received $1.5 million in Readiness and Environmental Protection (REPI) funds, and NAS Pensacola has received $175,000, in order to ensure that military training, testing, installations, and operations at Naval Air Stations are protected from encroachment.

Competition for land, airspace, and waterfront access often “bumps up” against our military installations, thus threatening our troops’ ability to train, and lessening our military readiness.

Admiral Gary Mayes, Commander, Navy Region Southeast said that “the protection these funds provide to the base missions are essential toward ensuring the long-term viability of the installations.” I could not agree more. The funding received by NAS Whiting Field and NAS Pensacola will ensure that our military installations continue to function at maximal efficiency, while also co-existing harmoniously with our local communities.

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz sees Wyoming as testing ground for Trump-style populism

Some, like Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Florida, even called for her resignation in an argument some likened to the opening of a “war zone” between two rival factions in the Republican Party.

William ‘Boots’ McCormick wants Walton to consider Trump resolution on oil and gas exploration

In the resolution, Gaetz — a staunch supporter of the former president — praises Trump’s September 2020 executive order extending the ban on oil and gas exploration in the eastern Gulf of Mexico for an additional decade from what had been its scheduled expiration on June 30, 2022. The previously looming expiration of the moratorium had been seen by officials at all levels of government in coastal Florida as a threat to the state’s tourism industry and, of particular interest to Gaetz, military operations in the Gulf Test Range. Gaetz has called preservation and enhancement of the range, covering 120,000 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico, his “top legislative priority.”

“The U.S. must use every means necessary to strip any funding mechanisms that helps bolster the illegitimate and corrupt Maduro socialist regime,” said Waltz. “This bipartisan legislation sets the roadmap for other countries to follow in hopes of restoring freedom and prosperity for the people of Venezuela.” The proposal is getting the support of several members of the Florida delegation including U.S. Reps.
