Today, I had the honor of administering the oath of office to Dr. Shirley Weber as California's 30th Secretary of State -- the first African American to hold that office in our state's history.

Dr. Weber is a tireless advocate and change agent with unimpeachable integrity and universal respect. The daughter of sharecroppers from Arkansas, her father didn't get to vote until his 30s -- and her grandfather never got to vote because he died before the Voting Rights Act passed in 1965.

As a child, she saw her parents rearrange furniture in their living room to serve as a local polling site for multiple elections when they moved to South Los Angeles. Now, she'll be at the helm of California's elections as the next Secretary of State -- defending and expanding the right to vote for tens of millions of Californians as our Chief Elections Officer.

I am so humbled to have been a small part of her journey. As an Assemblywoman, Dr. Weber translated her lifelong commitment to service into an ambitious agenda -- on education, civil rights, public safety, food insecurity, protections for persons with disabilities and voting rights.

I have full confidence that Dr. Weber will continue as a champion for justice as our next Secretary of State, just as she has her entire life. She knows that ensuring every eligible Californian has the right to vote is the fundamental building block for democracy and progress.

Pitch in any amount to support Dr. Shirley Weber on this historic day, so she can continue her fight to advance the right to vote for every Californian:
